If you sell on Walmart Marketplace, there is a good chance an important email is sitting in your spam folder right now. Walmart has started notifying sellers that once their business crosses $100,000 in sales over a rolling 12-month period, they must provide a Certificate of Insurance.
Miss the notice, and Walmart warns it may take adverse action against your seller account. Because these emails often land in junk or promotions folders, some sellers may not see them until their account is already at risk.
This guide breaks down what Walmart actually requires, the mistake that trips up even insured sellers, and the smarter way to get compliant.
What Walmart is asking for
Your Certificate of Insurance needs to show a specific set of details. If any one of them is wrong or missing, the certificate may be rejected.
At a minimum, Walmart requires:
- Commercial general liability and product liability coverage
- Limits of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate
- Walmart Inc., its subsidiaries, and its affiliates named as additional insured
- The insured name matching the exact legal business name used to join Walmart Marketplace
- The certificate uploaded in Seller Center under Finance and Tax → Insurance
That last detail about the legal business name is a common stumbling block. If your policy is under a slightly different name than your Walmart account, the certificate may not be accepted, even though your coverage is perfectly valid.
The mistake that catches even insured sellers
Here is the thing most sellers get wrong: being insured is not the same as being compliant. You can have an active, fully paid liability policy and still get flagged by Walmart, simply because the certificate was never uploaded to Seller Center in the format Walmart wants.
Walmart is not checking whether you have insurance in some abstract sense. It is checking whether a compliant certificate naming Walmart as additional insured is on file. No certificate on file means you are treated as non-compliant, policy or not.
So step one is to confirm what Walmart can actually see in your account.
Check your spam folder today
Do not wait to be notified. Take two minutes now:
- Search your inbox, spam, junk, and promotions folders for a Walmart message about insurance or a Certificate of Insurance.
- Log in to Seller Center and look under Finance and Tax → Insurance to see whether a certificate is already on file.
- If nothing is there, you need a compliant COI uploaded before Walmart acts on your account.
You do not have to use the program Walmart suggests
When sellers get the email, Walmart points them toward a suggested insurance program. What is not obvious is that this program runs through a single broker and offers just two carriers. In fact, that program’s own disclosure states that alternative insurance products are available in the marketplace.
In plain terms: you are required to carry the coverage. You are not required to buy it from the one option Walmart puts in front of you.
You are free to shop it, and for a lot of sellers, shopping it means a better fit for what they actually sell and a better price, with a certificate that still meets Walmart’s requirement exactly.
Why work with an independent broker who knows ecommerce
This is where the right partner makes the difference. Buying from a portal or a single carrier gets you a policy. Working with an independent broker who specializes in ecommerce gets you an advocate. Here is what that means for you:
Independent broker, not a funnel
We shop your coverage across the market instead of steering you toward one carrier.
Ecommerce is what we do
We specialize in marketplace sellers on Walmart, Amazon, and TikTok Shop, so we know the exact wording Seller Center accepts.
A real person, not an 800 number
You get someone you can call and build a relationship with, not a web form and a case number.
We handle the whole thing
We issue the compliant COI, match it to your exact legal business name, and walk you through the Seller Center upload.
We stay with you
We are here for renewals, updates, and changing coverage needs as your store grows.
How to get compliant
The process is simple when someone handles it with you:
- Fill out the application at ecom.insure.
- We shop the market and compare coverage and pricing across carriers.
- We issue a compliant COI with the required limits and Walmart named as additional insured.
- You upload it in Seller Center, and we show you exactly where it goes.
Do not let a spam folder cost you your account
The Walmart requirement is real, but it is not complicated to solve once you know what the certificate needs to show and where it goes. Check your junk folder, confirm what is on file in Seller Center, and, if you need a compliant COI, work with a broker who shops for you and picks up the phone.
Get insurance from someone you can have a relationship with. Not an 800 number.
