Professional Liability Insurance for Coaches & Consultants
General liability does not cover bad advice
General liability covers physical injury and property damage. It does not cover the financial damage your client claims from your advice, your strategy, your deliverables, or a missed deadline. That is where errors and omissions (E&O) — also called professional liability — does the work.
What general liability covers
- ✗ Bodily injury to a third party at your office or event
- ✗ Property damage caused by your business operations
- ✗ Slip and fall claims
- ✗ Advertising injury (defamation, copyright in ads)
- ✗ NOT covered: financial damage from your professional services
What professional liability adds
- ✓ Errors and omissions in your advice or strategy
- ✓ Failure to deliver promised results
- ✓ Missed deadlines that cost the client money
- ✓ Breach of contract claims tied to your services
- ✓ Negligence in your professional duties
- ✓ Defense costs even when claims are baseless
How coaches and consultants actually get sued
You can do everything right and still get a claim. These are the scenarios where E&O steps in to defend you and pay the loss.
The strategy that did not work
Marketing consultant builds a campaign that misses targets. Client sues for the consulting fees plus claimed lost revenue. E&O defends and settles.
The missed deadline
Web designer misses a launch date by 6 weeks. Client claims lost sales during the delay. E&O covers the financial damage claim.
The bad advice
Business coach advises a client to expand into a new product line. The expansion fails. Client claims the advice was negligent. E&O pays defense and settlement.
The deliverable error
Bookkeeping consultant misclassifies expenses on a client return. IRS audit follows. Client sues for back taxes, penalties, and interest. E&O covers the loss.
The breach of contract
Client claims you did not deliver the scope of work in your contract. Whether or not the claim is valid, E&O covers your legal defense costs.
The reputation claim
Disgruntled client publicly accuses you of malpractice. You defend the claim publicly. E&O policies often include public relations coverage.
Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance FAQ
What is the difference between professional liability and general liability?
General liability covers physical risks (bodily injury, property damage). Professional liability (also called errors and omissions or E&O) covers financial damage caused by your professional services or advice. Most coaches and consultants need both because the risks are completely different.
Do I need professional liability if I have a business contract with my clients?
Yes. Contracts with limitation of liability clauses help, but they do not stop a client from filing suit. Professional liability covers your legal defense costs (often the largest expense in any dispute) regardless of whether the claim is ultimately valid.
How much does E&O insurance cost for coaches and consultants?
Average premiums run around $55 to $60 per month for solo consultants. 73 percent of small consulting businesses pay under $45 per month. A 10-person consulting firm with enterprise clients can expect $130 or more per month.
What is the standard coverage limit for E&O?
Most coaches and consultants start with $1 million per claim and $2 million aggregate. Upgrading to $2 million per claim adds $20 to $40 per month. Larger firms or sellers with high-value clients often carry $3 million to $5 million.
Does E&O cover claims for advice I gave before the policy started?
Generally no — most professional liability policies are written on a claims-made basis, meaning they only cover claims FILED while the policy is active and the alleged error happened after the policy retroactive date. Maintaining continuous coverage is critical.
Will my homeowners insurance cover my coaching business?
No. Homeowners policies exclude business activity. Even if you coach from home, you need a separate professional liability policy.
What types of coaches and consultants need E&O?
Business coaches, marketing consultants, financial coaches, life coaches with paid programs, fitness coaches with structured programs, IT consultants, HR consultants, brand strategists, ecommerce growth consultants, and anyone giving advice clients pay for and act on.
