Section 1 · Why Sell Online

Sell wherever your customers are

Customers buy across dozens of platforms now. The smart play is to sell where they shop, not where you prefer. The harder question is: how do you cover yourself across every marketplace, with their different requirements and risk profiles?

The Reality

What going multi-platform looks like

  • ✗ Each platform has its own commission structure and rules
  • ✗ Different platforms require different additional insureds
  • ✗ Platform suspensions can happen overnight without recourse
  • ✗ Returns and chargebacks vary by marketplace policy
  • ✗ Buyer protection programs shift the risk to YOU, not the platform
  • ✗ One bad review or claim can trigger account-level actions
Built For Multi Platform

What proper marketplace coverage delivers

  • ✓ $1M / $2M general liability and product liability that meets every major platform minimum
  • ✓ Additional insured endorsements for Amazon, TikTok Shop, Walmart, Wayfair, Chewy, eBay, and Etsy
  • ✓ Platform suspension and account freeze coverage (cyber endorsement)
  • ✓ Cargo and inventory coverage that follows your goods to ANY platform's warehouse
  • ✓ Recall and contamination response across all listings simultaneously

Section 2 · By Platform

How insurance requirements vary across marketplaces

Each platform has its own rules. Some require proof of insurance up front, others only on request, others enforce silently. Here is what each major platform expects in 2026.

Platform

TikTok Shop

Required for ingestibles, beauty, supplements, and high-risk categories. TikTok launched its Insurance Center inside Seller Center in 2026. Most sellers need $1M / $1M per occurrence and aggregate. TikTok Shop, ByteDance, and TikTok Inc. should be named as additional insureds.

Platform

Amazon

Required at $10K monthly revenue. Amazon mandates $1M per-occurrence and $1M aggregate of commercial general liability and product liability once gross proceeds exceed $10K in any month. Amazon.com Services LLC must be named as an additional insured. Non-compliance triggers listing suspension.

Platform

Walmart Marketplace

Required at onboarding for many categories. Walmart can require proof of commercial liability insurance, including general liability, product liability, COIs, and Walmart Inc. as an additional insured. High-risk categories face stricter requirements.

Platform

eBay

Not mandated, but high risk for sellers without it. eBay does not currently mandate insurance, but selling on eBay exposes you to product damage, customer injury, shipping disputes, and chargebacks. Buyer protection programs heavily favor buyers — sellers without insurance absorb every loss.

Platform

Etsy

Not mandated, but recommended for handmade and ingestibles. Etsy does not require insurance for most sellers, but vendors selling handmade cosmetics, food, candles, supplements, or pet products face the same product liability exposure as Amazon sellers. Coverage is strongly recommended.

Platform

Shopify

Not platform-required, but required by app integrations and payment partners. Shopify itself does not mandate insurance, but Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, and many app integrations require it. Multi-platform Shopify sellers (selling on Shopify plus marketplaces) need policies that follow them everywhere.

Platform

Wayfair, Chewy, Target Plus, Best Buy, Home Depot

Required for inclusion in seller programs. National retailers running marketplace programs typically require $2M to $5M in coverage with their entity named as additional insured. Onboarding requires proof at submission.

Platform

Rivly

Recommended for all sellers. Like other large platforms, Rivly sellers should maintain commercial general liability and product liability insurance with the platform listed as additional insured. Coverage requests increase as sellers scale.

"The risk is the same everywhere you sell. The platforms change, the customers change, the buyer protection rules change. The product still has to perform, and the seller is still the one on the hook when it does not."

Section 3 · Why Liability Insurance May Not Be Enough

Multi platform sellers need more than basic coverage

General liability and product liability are table stakes. Multi platform sellers also need cyber for account takeovers, cargo for goods in transit, inventory for off-site storage, and platform-specific endorsements that match each marketplace's contractual requirements.

Coverage Gap

Account takeover

Phishing attack drains your TikTok Shop seller account. Standard liability does not cover this — cyber endorsement does.

Coverage Gap

Cargo damage

Container of goods damaged en route to FBA, 3PL, and Walmart fulfillment. Liability does not pay for damaged inventory — cargo / inland marine does.

Coverage Gap

Recall response

Platform-wide recall hits Amazon, TikTok Shop, and Walmart simultaneously. Liability covers customer injury claims; recall response covers the cost of pulling the product.

Coverage Gap

Inventory at off-site

Inventory at multiple FBA, 3PL, and home locations. Standard property covers your address only. Inland marine covers everywhere.

Coverage Gap

Platform suspension

Listing or account suspended without warning. Cyber and business interruption endorsements help cover lost revenue.

Coverage Gap

Multi-state breach

Customer data leak triggers state attorney general filings across multiple states. Cyber pays the notification and legal costs that scale with how many states you sell into.

Plain English Answers

Marketplace and Online Seller Insurance FAQ

What insurance do I need to sell on multiple platforms?

At minimum, $1M / $2M commercial general liability and product liability with the right additional insured endorsements for each marketplace. Multi-platform sellers also typically need inland marine for inventory, cargo for transit, cyber for platform account compromises, and recall response for product issues. One properly structured policy can cover all of this — but it has to be built for ecommerce, not retrofitted from a small-business policy.

Does TikTok Shop require insurance in 2026?

TikTok does not require every seller to upload proof of insurance, but specific categories (ingestibles, beauty, supplements, wellness, cosmetics, high-risk consumer goods) are expected to carry product liability coverage. TikTok launched its Insurance Center inside Seller Center in 2026 to manage this directly. Higher-volume sellers should expect TikTok to request proof.

Does Amazon require insurance for FBA sellers?

Yes — at $10,000 monthly gross proceeds. Amazon requires $1M per occurrence and $1M aggregate of commercial general liability and product liability. Amazon.com Services LLC must be listed as an additional insured. This applies to FBA, FBM, and seller-fulfilled prime listings.

Will one policy cover Amazon, TikTok Shop, Walmart, and Shopify?

Yes, with the right additional insured endorsements. The policy itself does not change per platform — what changes is the additional insured language and the certificate of insurance you submit to each. We structure policies so a single COI can be issued for any platform on demand.

What about eBay and Etsy — do I need insurance there?

Neither platform mandates insurance for most sellers. But you still face product liability exposure. eBay's Buyer Protection program tilts heavily toward buyers, meaning sellers absorb most disputes. Etsy sellers in handmade cosmetics, food, supplements, or pet products face significant product risk. We recommend coverage for any serious seller on either platform.

What does "additional insured" mean for a marketplace?

When you name a marketplace as an additional insured, your policy extends coverage to that marketplace if a claim is made that involves your products or your seller account. This is what marketplaces require to protect themselves from being pulled into lawsuits stemming from your listings. Without proper additional insured language, your COI gets rejected.

How much does multi-platform ecommerce insurance cost?

Most multi-platform ecommerce sellers pay $500 to $2,000 per year for a bundled policy covering general liability, product liability, and the right additional insureds. Adding cyber, cargo, inland marine, and recall response can bring the total to $2,500 to $5,000 per year for mid-sized sellers. The cost scales with revenue, product category, and the number of platforms.

What happens if my account gets suspended on a platform?

Suspensions can happen with no warning. Without business interruption or cyber endorsements, you absorb every dollar of lost revenue. With proper coverage, your policy can help cover lost income while you work to restore the account. We build platform suspension language into policies for sellers across multiple marketplaces.
