Section 1 · The 2026 Threat Landscape

Cyber risk is the fastest growing claim category in ecommerce

In 2026 the global average cost of a data breach is $4.4 million. For small to mid sized ecommerce sellers, a single breach can mean state attorney general filings, frozen Shopify or Stripe payouts, customer notification costs, and lawsuits — none of which are covered by general liability or product liability.

Section 2 · Real Scenarios

How ecommerce sellers actually get hit

Cyber attacks are no longer rare events. These are claims our clients have filed in the last 24 months. Standard general liability paid zero on every one.

Scenario 1

The Shopify takeover

Phishing email gets your store admin credentials. Attacker changes payout banking info, siphons three days of revenue before you notice. Cyber covers the recovery and forensics.

Scenario 2

The customer data leak

Misconfigured app exposes 8,000 customer email and address records. State attorneys general require notification across 12 states. Cyber pays notification costs and legal fees.

Scenario 3

The ransomware lockout

Ransomware encrypts your inventory management system. Operations halt for 5 days during peak Q4. Cyber covers the negotiation, ransom (if paid), and business interruption.

Scenario 4

The wire fraud

Fake invoice email impersonates your supplier. Bookkeeper wires $42,000 to attacker. Crime / cyber endorsement reimburses the loss.

Scenario 5

The Stripe freeze

A breach triggers Stripe's fraud algorithms. Stripe holds 90 days of payouts pending investigation. Cyber covers the cash flow gap.

Scenario 6

The PCI fine

Investigation reveals you stored card data in a non-compliant way. PCI Security Standards Council issues a fine. Cyber liability pays the fine and remediation costs.

Cyber Liability Insurance FAQ

What is cyber liability insurance?

Cyber liability insurance protects your business from the financial damage of cyber incidents. This includes both first-party losses (your direct costs from a breach, ransomware, or fraud) and third-party losses (lawsuits from customers whose data was exposed). Most ecommerce policies bundle data breach response, ransomware coverage, and crime endorsements.

Do I need cyber insurance if I do not handle credit card data directly?

Yes. Even if Stripe, Shopify, or PayPal handles your card data, you still collect customer email addresses, shipping addresses, order history, and account credentials. State data breach notification laws apply to any business that collects personally identifiable information — and lawsuits target the seller, not the payment processor.

How much does cyber insurance cost for ecommerce sellers?

Standalone cyber insurance starts around $57 per month. A general liability plus cyber bundle for small ecommerce typically runs $80 to $150 per month. Cost depends on revenue, data volume, security practices (multi-factor authentication is now required by most carriers), and prior claim history.

What does cyber insurance NOT cover?

Cyber typically does not cover physical property damage, bodily injury, intentional acts, contractual breach not related to security, or losses that pre-date the policy. Acts of war and infrastructure-level outages are also commonly excluded. Read the policy.

Will my general liability policy cover a data breach?

No. Standard general liability covers bodily injury and property damage caused by your business operations or premises. Data is not "property" under most GL policies, and a breach is not a covered cause of loss. You need a separate cyber policy or a GL policy with a specific cyber endorsement.

What is required to get a cyber insurance quote in 2026?

Most carriers now require multi-factor authentication on email and admin accounts, regular backups, employee security training, and an incident response plan. Carriers will ask about your last 3 to 5 years of claim history. Sellers without basic security measures may be declined or face significantly higher premiums.

Does cyber insurance cover Shopify, Amazon, or TikTok Shop account takeovers?

Yes, when properly endorsed. Account takeover and platform suspension coverage is now a standard endorsement on cyber policies for ecommerce sellers. We make sure these endorsements are in place because platform compromises are one of the most common claim types we see.
