Multi-Platform COI FAQ

Can one insurance policy cover multiple marketplaces and retailers?

Yes. One occurrence-basis Commercial General Liability policy can satisfy most marketplaces simultaneously. Each platform requires its own additional insured language on the certificate, but the underlying policy is the same. We typically issue a single policy with a portfolio of additional insured endorsements ready on demand for any platform.

What's the difference between a marketplace COI and a wholesale / retailer COI?

Marketplace COIs (Amazon, TikTok Shop, eBay, Etsy, Shopify) typically have lower minimum limits ($1M / $2M) and accept blanket additional insured endorsements. Wholesale and retailer COIs (Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart) typically require higher limits ($2M to $20M aggregate by category), specific endorsement forms (CG 20 15 / CG 20 26), waiver of subrogation, and primary / non-contributory wording.

Why does each platform have different requirements?

Each platform sets requirements based on its own legal exposure, vendor relationships, and industry standards. Marketplaces with consumer-facing products (Amazon, TikTok Shop) focus on product liability. Brick-and-mortar retailers (Target, Walmart, Home Depot) face premises liability and physical damage exposures. Specialty retailers (Chewy for pet products, Sally Beauty for cosmetics) require category-specific coverage extensions.

How long does it take to get a compliant COI?

Once your policy is bound, a properly formatted COI can typically be issued within 24 to 48 hours. We issue same-day for sellers with active policies who need to add a new platform endorsement.

What happens if my COI gets rejected by a platform?

Most platforms email a specific rejection reason — wrong cert holder, missing additional insured language, low aggregate, or carrier rating issue. A compliant COI can usually be re-issued the same business day once the issue is identified.

Do I need separate Cyber Liability for marketplaces?

Most marketplaces don't require Cyber Liability — but Target requires $5M, ABC / Good Morning America requires $2M, and any vendor with access to retailer systems or customer data should carry it. Cyber averages $50 to $400 per month depending on revenue and data volume.

What if I sell across 5 platforms simultaneously?

One properly structured CGL policy can serve all of them. We build policies with a portfolio of additional insured endorsements ready on demand. You request a COI for any platform, we issue it within 24 to 48 hours with that platform's specific cert holder and AI language.

Can I use a hobbyist or homeowners policy for marketplace selling?

No. Homeowners policies explicitly exclude business activity. Hobbyist or occasional crafter coverage is not real for sellers generating revenue. Even if you sell on Etsy at low volume, you need a commercial general liability policy that specifically lists ecommerce activity.

Do platforms verify carrier ratings?

Yes, all major platforms verify A.M. Best ratings. Most require A- VII or better. Target requires higher. Carriers below the platform's minimum rating result in COI rejection regardless of how clean the rest of the certificate is.

How much does multi-platform compliance insurance cost?

Most multi-platform ecommerce sellers pay $500 to $2,000 per year for a bundled policy covering general liability, product liability, and the right additional insureds. Adding cyber, cargo, inland marine, and recall response can bring the total to $2,500 to $5,000 per year for mid-sized sellers.
